Skintone Tests We Wish We'd Known About Earlier

We all have certain undertone, which is the layer underneath the top skin. If you see yourself in the mirror you can already tell what complexion/undertone you have. There are several ways to determine your skin’s undertone. Start by looking at the inside part of your wrist, where the underlying color shows through fairly well. This area is naturally hidden from the sun and, therefore, is not sun damaged or discolored, which is why skin in this area works best to reveal how warm, cool, or neutral your skin really is. One big misconception is that pale girls can’t be warm-toned. In fact, many fair-skinned women have warm undertones (Nicole Kidman is one of them!) and dark-skinned women have cool tones (supermodel Alek Wek is a cool tone.). If you are unsure and having a tough time finding out which undertone you are, you are most likely neutral. Choose any of these tests below and find out.

Tan test – If you tend to tan under the sun and not burn, then you may be a warm undertone and if you don’t tan, you just burn then you have a cool undertone. Those who swing both ways, could be neutral.

Clothes test – Which colours can you wear best? If you’re better in blues, greens and bluey-reds, then you are more likely a cool undertone. However, if you are better in yellow or orangey-reds than then you have a warm undertone.

Veins test – If your veins (in your wrist) look blue then you have a cool undertone and if you have more greeny veins then you would be a warm undertone. If you cannot tell, then you’re in the neutral group.

The Jewellery test – If you prefer the way silver looks against your skin, you’re more likely a cool undertone but if you’re better in gold, you could be a warm tone. If you’re inclined to wear both and they suit you – you might have a neutral undertone.

Identify with a Celeb - a few celebs who have cool undertones: Martha Hunt, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, Cara Delevingne. A celebs who have warm undertones: Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Alba, Rachel Bilson, Jennifer Aniston, Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian.

This however, is just a guide and sometimes your answers might clash. Eventually you will discover through trial and error what your undertone is.
